Efficient drilling plays an important role in overall mining productivity. Yet, even experienced crews can encounter issues that increase operating costs, reduce performance, and cause unnecessary equipment wear. Many of these problems stem from common mistakes that can be avoided with proper practices and operational awareness.

1. Incorrect Drill Setup
A reliable drilling operation starts with proper equipment positioning. An uneven rig or incorrect feed angle can cause hole deviation, affecting blast accuracy and potentially requiring corrective work. Checking alignment, stability, and positioning before collaring helps minimize these risks.

2. Unsuitable Drilling Parameters
Ground conditions vary, and drilling settings should reflect those differences. Excessive feed force or incorrect rotation speed can reduce penetration rates, accelerate bit wear, and strain the drill string. Adjusting parameters based on rock hardness, bit type, and equipment specifications helps maintain consistent performance.

3. Inadequate Hole Cleaning
Effective hole cleaning is essential for efficient drilling. When cuttings accumulate inside the hole due to insufficient air flushing, friction increases and penetration rates can decline. Maintaining adequate airflow throughout the drilling cycle helps protect drilling tools and supports smoother operations.

4. Neglecting Equipment Inspections
Minor equipment issues can quickly become costly problems. Worn drill bits, damaged rods, hydraulic leaks, and loose connections may lead to unexpected breakdowns if overlooked. Routine inspections and timely maintenance help reduce downtime and extend equipment service life.

Building Better Drilling Practices
Improving drilling efficiency often begins with consistently applying the fundamentals. Proper setup, suitable drilling parameters, effective hole cleaning, and regular inspections all contribute to more reliable operations.

At Drilledge, we believe strong drilling performance starts with knowledgeable people. Through practical learning and industry-proven best practices, we help mining professionals strengthen their operational understanding and support safer, more efficient drilling.
